donation process

Most stem cell donation is done peripherally i.e. no bone marrow operation:

There are three ways to obtain stem cells for transplants:

a. Peripheral stem cell collection

b. Bone marrow collection

c. Umbilical cord blood

Today, due to medical advances, about 80% of stem cell donation is done from peripheral blood, which is very similar to donating blood.

Only a few actually donate stem cells:

Only a small number of people in the registry will actually have the opportunity to donate stem cells but You could be the one match that could save a life. Your cheek (buccal) swab could be that first step that gives someone back their life.
